Lighthouse Medical's 2nd Annual Open House - 10/06/2011

According to the Susan G. Komen Organization, Breast Cancer typically strikes women during their most productive years both professionally and personally. In 2011, it is estimated that among women in the United States, there will be 230,480 new cases of invasive breast cancer and 57,650 new cases of in situ breast cancer.  It is important to note that breast cancer can also strike men, which is rare but in 2011 it is estimated that among men in the United States, there will be 2,140 new cases.

In their continuing effort to support Breast Health Awareness, Lighthouse Medical Equipment, located at 120 South Main Street in Thomaston, is hosting a Breast Health Awareness Open House exclusively at their Women’s Boutique.  They will be performing free bra fittings, free form consultations, and providing free breast health literature.  All survivors will receive a free gift bag and will be offered Reiki & Reflexology Healing therapies.

Dawn Stanco, Lighthouse Medical Equipment, BOC Certified Mastectomy Fitter and Breast Cancer Survivor, decided to open the Women’s Boutique after being diagnosed with Breast Cancer. “I found it very difficult to find bras and other garments that would fit me properly after my surgery. It was very discouraging going into lingerie shops and trying on garments that were not designed to fit my new shape. I was also unable to find a store where I felt comfortable shopping in.  So, I designed our Boutique to be a separate element from the main store.  It is very discreet and offers a private fitting room.”

“Here in our Boutique you can find after surgery garments, hundreds of different bras, quality forms, awareness jewelry, and even fashion scarves and head wraps. I have hand picked many different styles designed not only for comfort, but style as well. The Boutique is a place you can come to, tell me your story and know that I have been through the same ordeal. And together we can find the perfect fit for you!”

It is important to note that Dawn frequently visits clients at the hospital upon discharge to fit them for after surgery garments.  Home fittings are also available for clients who are not feeling well enough to drive. New to the Boutique, they are also offering maternity bras and full figured bras (by special order) to accommodate all women’s breast health needs!

On October 8th from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. please join Dawn and the staff at Lighthouse in their 2nd annual Open House. They will be offering free bra fittings, survivor gift bags, breast health literature, Reiki and Reflexology Healing for Survivors – compliments of Beth Aleksinas, and refreshments by Thomaston’s new bakery – Cutie Pies!

Dawn Stanco, a Plymouth resident and Lighthouse Medical’s team leader was one of the top ten participant’s in fundraising. Dawn and her two daughters, Kayla – 9, and Brianna – 6, all wearing pink shirts were all smiles as they finished the three mile walk.

“I am walking for my daughters, sisters, mother, grandmother and all the other girls I know. I am walking to keep hope going for other women that the great medical support I received will be there for them too! If it wasn’t for my wonderful doctors, nurses, and the help of The American Cancer Society, I wouldn’t be here today to see my two beautiful daughters grow up and enjoy my life with them and my fiancée Marc” said Dawn.

“I went this far and I am going to finish.” said Mary Noel, Dawn’s 85 year-old grandmother. Mary stopped to rest a few times but she finished!

More than $78,000 was raised from the Walk. Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is a non-competitive walk to help fight breast cancer and provide hope to people facing the disease.

“Being here today we are all making a difference” said Theresa Mullin, Community Executive for Development for The American Cancer Society.

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is the country’s largest and oldest breast cancer walk.
